N K Kurian
Founder of 1st Agricultural Theme Park

Nellikkuzhi Kuriakose Kurian (born 12 May 1971), commonly known as N. K. Kurian, is an Indian agriculture entrepreneur and the founder of Mango Meadows Agricultural Theme Park, regarded as India’s first agricultural theme park. He is known for developing an integrated farm-based model that combines agriculture, biodiversity conservation, eco-tourism, and value-added rural enterprise.
Early life and career
Kurian holds a diploma in civil engineering. He began his professional career in Saudi Arabia and later worked in Dubai. After several years abroad, he returned to Kerala with the intention of pursuing sustainable agriculture and creating alternative income models for farmers.
Having grown up with farming, Kurian was familiar with the economic challenges faced by Indian cultivators, including dependence on intermediaries, climate-related crop losses, and declining profitability. These experiences shaped his later work in agricultural innovation.

Mango Meadows and the agricultural theme park concept
Kurian conceptualized the agricultural theme park as a multifunctional farm ecosystem developed within or adjacent to agricultural land. The core objective of the model is to connect consumers directly with farms, enabling farmers to sell produce in value-added forms while reducing dependence on middlemen.
Development of Mango Meadows began in 2004 and took more than a decade of sustained effort. The project transformed previously degraded land into an artificial forest and biodiversity zone, integrating crop cultivation, livestock farming, hospitality facilities, restaurants, wellness spaces, and visitor experiences.
Unlike conventional agri-tourism initiatives that focus primarily on farming activities, Mango Meadows follows a broader approach by combining agriculture with tourism, education, and community engagement. The park promotes organic practices, discourages chemical pesticide use, supports biodiversity conservation, and provides supplementary income opportunities for farmers through direct sales and experiential activities.
Kurian has stated that diversification beyond primary agriculture—through tourism, value addition, and on-farm enterprises—is essential for improving long-term farmer livelihoods.

Awards and recognition
Kurian’s work has received national and international recognition. He has been listed in URF World Records and honored by the Limca Book of Records.
In 2017, he received the Garshom International Awards, which recognize contributions by Non-Resident Keralites to society and development in Kerala.
In 2024, Kurian was selected for the IARI Innovative Farmer Award by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute for his contributions to agriculture and sustainable farming practices.
His work has also been acknowledged by institutions including ICAR-CCARI, reflecting broader academic and governmental interest in his agricultural model.
Legacy
K. Kurian is regarded as an advocate of farmer-centric development and sustainable land use. Through Mango Meadows, he has demonstrated a model that integrates agriculture, conservation, and rural entrepreneurship, contributing to discussions on alternative farming economies and community-based agricultural innovation in India.
