Agricultural Theme Park — Where Nature, Culture, and Farming Unite

The Agricultural Theme Park is the visionary creation of N. K. Kurian—a civil engineer by training, farmer by roots, and conservationist by passion. Guided by his deep love for nature and traditional agriculture, Kurian transformed barren farmland into India’s first man-made Agricultural and Biodiversity Park, spread across 30 acres in Kottayam, Kerala.

Recognized by record authorities as a first-of-its-kind initiative, this living landscape represents more than two decades of dedication, experimentation, and perseverance.

The Vision Behind the Park
India is home to millions of subsistence farmers who often struggle due to middlemen, volatile markets, erratic weather, and rising production costs. During the 1990s and 2000s, mounting agricultural losses led to severe financial distress across rural communities. Having witnessed these hardships firsthand, Kurian began searching for a sustainable alternative. He realized that farmers needed:
  • Direct access to consumers
  •  Value addition to farm produce
  • Supplementary income beyond crop sales
From this understanding emerged a powerful idea: bring the buyer directly to the farm. Agricultural Theme Parks are designed within or adjacent to agricultural land, with the core purpose of enabling farmers to sell value-added products directly to visitors—eliminating intermediaries and ensuring fair returns—while also generating income through farm-based experiences. While similar concepts exist in places like Maine, Michigan, and Philippines, most focus only on agriculture. A holistic model—such as Mango Meadows—integrates farming with biodiversity conservation, education, hospitality, food experiences, and cultural immersion. Kurian began formal work on this project in 2003, opening the park to the public and researchers in December 2018 after more than 11 years of intensive development.
Preserving Heritage, Empowering Farmers
Driven by concern that traditional agricultural knowledge was fading, Kurian designed the park to transmit ecological wisdom, cultural heritage, and sustainable farming practices to future generations. The attractions thoughtfully weave together flora associated with myths, religion, traditions, literature, and regional culture—making learning engaging for visitors of all ages. Hands-on experiences include:
  •  Traditional farming methods and seasonal crop cycles
  • Use of indigenous tools like kalpa
  • Live demonstrations of pottery, coir-making, and handicrafts
  • Folk music, local cuisine, and cultural performances
Agricultural and botanical students from India and abroad undergo training programs here, receiving certification upon completion.
A Living Repository of Biodiversity
Unlike conventional conservation parks that preserve existing ecosystems, Kurian painstakingly created one—collecting seeds, saplings, and plants from over 100 countries and nurturing them on-site. Today, the park hosts:
  • Over 4,800 species of plants
  • 700 species of trees
  • 1,900 species of herbs, including medicinal varieties
  • 850 species of shrubs
  • 500 species of climbers
It also showcases forestry, horticulture, commercial crops, aromatic plants, and spices. Visitors can explore butterfly gardens, organic vegetable plots, and animal farms featuring indigenous poultry along with emu, geese, quail, and partridges. Rare cattle breeds such as Vechur cows and Kasaragod Kullan are preserved here, alongside prospective farm animals like rabbits and emus. A freshwater fish farm maintains 64 varieties of edible fish, with nutrient-rich pond water naturally fertilizing surrounding crops.

Benefits of the Agricultural Theme Park Model
For farmers, the park enables:
  • Supplementary income from tourism and experiences
  • Higher earnings through value-added products
  • A shift toward organic farming
  • Preservation of biodiversity
  • Direct sales to end users
For visitors, it offers:
  • Educational farm experiences
  • Health and wellness activities
  • Entertainment and leisure
  • Lodging and research facilities
  • Authentic exposure to traditional rural life
Most importantly, it creates a sustainable ecosystem where farmers are empowered not just as producers—but as entrepreneurs, educators, and custodians of nature.
A Movement, Not Just a Destination
The Agricultural Theme Park stands as a living example of how agriculture can evolve—economically, culturally, and environmentally. It restores dignity to farming, reconnects people with nature, and builds a future where rural communities thrive alongside biodiversity. At its heart, this is more than a park. It is a promise—to farmers, to nature, and to generations yet to come.
